Signs of Hidden Water Leaks (and What to Do)

Water leaks cause a lot of problems. They damage your home, they cause mold, and they can raise your utility bills. To make things worse, they’re often a sign of a larger issue. If you’re seeing water damage in your ceiling or on your walls, then there’s likely been a problem for a while.

It’s best to spot water damage sooner rather than later. As providers of emergency water damage restoration in the Springfield, Ohio area, we’ve seen our fair share of water leaks. Here are a few signs to look out for so that you can repair your leaks before they cause serious damage.

Mysteriously High Bills

Are your water bills suddenly higher month after month? It could be a water leak. Go around your home and check sinks and pipes for any leaking. You should also make sure you don’t have a toilet that’s constantly running. If everything looks fine, and your water bill still remains high, there might be a hidden leak somewhere.

Check your home for the other issues listed below.

Musty Odors

When it comes to water leaks, you’ll sometimes notice unpleasant odors before you actually see damage. Trapped moisture starts to smell after a while. If there’s a particular room in your home that smells inexplicably musty, there could be a water leak behind a wall or ceiling. See if you can locate the source of the smell. It’s also good to check for any visible damage.

Unexplained Mold

In case you didn’t know, mold spores are already in your home, waiting to latch onto a moist surface. A water leak provides the perfect opportunity for mold spores to collect and multiply. If mold starts appearing on a wall or ceiling that should otherwise be dry, there could be a leak behind it.

At this point, it’s a good idea to contact a mold remediation expert (like us).

Warped Ceilings/Walls

Modern walls and ceilings can hold out against moisture for a while. But continued exposure can eventually cause things to give. A sagging ceiling, warped wall, bubbling texture, and peeling wallpaper are all signs of hidden water damage.

Once again, if you spot this issue in your home, it’s best to call a professional and have it addressed correctly. If water damage isn’t properly fixed, the problem is likely to reemerge and cause further problems.
